This Is How We Do It Thanksgiving
Philippians 4:4-13
Series Idea: Through all the ways we worship God, He makes himself known, the gospel is re-presented, our identification is found and we are sent on mission.
Message Idea: Worship doesn’t exist without gratitude. Rejoice in the Lord [Phl 4:4-7 NIV] 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
 
 
Think good thoughts [Phl 4:8-9 NIV] 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
 
 
Be content [Phl 4:10-12 NIV] 10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
 
 
Give God the glory [Phl 4:13 NIV] 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

    This Is How We Do It #4 – Serve – Richard Crockett
    Big Idea: Followers of Jesus make a difference by SERVING.
     
    What Jesus taught us about this meal is so important… -Only miracle in all four Gospels. -Matthew 14:13-21 -Luke 9:10-17 -Mark 6:30-44 -John 6:1-15
    - Luke 9:10-17 (NIV)
     
    When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.”  (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
     
    1. When Jesus want to solve a problem, HE SENDS A SERVANT.
    -Mark 6:34 - When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
    -Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve… and to give his life as a ransom for many.” -Richard Foster – There’s a difference between choosing TO SERVE and choosing to be A SERVANT. When I choose to serve, I retain control about who I serve, and when I serve, and when I serve, and how I serve. But when I choose to be a servant, I have given up all rights and controls.
     
    2. When you agree to serve with Jesus, He will provide.
    -As a Christ follower, you get to make a difference in this world through serving… particularly in serving the NEXT GENERATION like the child in this story.
    -If you don’t serve – you should not expect that you will ever experience the joy, peace, sense of purpose and significance that comes when you make a difference…which is NORMAL for people who serve.
    -A lot of people never serve with the gifts God has given them because of fear.
    -Courage to serve is not the absence of fear, it is the absence of self.
     
    3. When we choose to serve…Jesus make an IMPACT through us.
    I = IDENTIFY your gift. M = MAKE a commitment to use it! P = PRACTICE to optimize your gift. A = ASK for feedback. C = CONSIDER the opportunities T = TEAM up with other people
     
    -If Jesus were here today, He would say: YOU serve, and we will make a difference.

    Exodus 20:3 - You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 3: 2-10 - There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight – why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, Moses, Moses! And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he said, “I am the God of your faith, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey – the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending your to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt. God has made himself known. We understand who we are when we worship God. God gives us identity and then send us out on mission.
     
    The whole purpose of our worship gathering is to please God.
     
    Romans 12:1 - Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.
     
    Jesus told us to go and make disciples, not converts.
     
    John 4:21-23 – Woman, Jesus replied. “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”
