Simple Parenting – Love Brightly

Review:
-Parenting is Simple but not easy.
-Our responsibility is to teach our kids to transfer dependence from us to God
-The path is by teaching, speaking and showing: “Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and Love your neighbor as your self.”

Truth #1: The reality of Christian parenting is that you are raising your children to send them into a world that is actively against them.
If you don’t understand this and don’t prepare them for it, they will not know how to depend on God.

Truth #2: We too often focus on the darkness of the world and not on the light of Christ.
When our expectation doesn’t meet with reality, we blame the world.

1.  When Jesus enters the picture: Expectation vs. Reality
     A.  Jerusalem; The Triumphant entry. (Matt. 21:1-11, Luke 19:29, Mark 11:1, John 12:12)
          I.  Expectation: Take over Rome
          II.  Reality: Crucified
     B.  Our lives
          I.  Expectation: fix our problems
II.  Reality: calls us to follow
     C.  Our kids lives
          I.  Expectation: protects from all harm
II.  Reality: calls them to follow
     D.  God is more concerned with our character that the circumstances

2.  What is our responsibility in the darkness (Phil. 2:15-16)
     A.  Stop whining
     B.  Start shining
3.  Sending our kids into a dark world
     A.  The brighter you shine the easier it is to see
          I.  Most peoples struggle with the darkness is that they don’t shine bright enough
II.  You can only teach your child to shine as bright as you do
     B.  Sending happens their whole life
          I.  As they shine brighter, send them deeper
          I.  Darkness is to be respected, not feared (Matt. 10:28)
4.  God fills gaps

    Simple Parenting – Love Openly
    Matthew 22:36-40, Deut. 6:5-9, Lev. 19:18
    Review:
-Parenting is simple; it’s not easy
-Our Job is to teach our kids to transfer their dependence from us to God
    -Parents influence:
Number one influence in their life
Determines development of the frontal lobe
    Teaches relationship building

[Mat 22:36-40 NIV] 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

The path of transferring dependence is through the greatest two commandments.

    1. Love the Lord your God
[Deu 6:5-9 NIV] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
    Do
A child’s dependence will be transferred from the parent to whatever the parent is dependent on.
    Speak
You must verbalize what your believe and why
    Ask questions
    Show
What they see must match with what they hear
    2. Love your neighbor as your self
    - First, love the church
[Lev 19:18 NIV] 18 " 'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
    - Second, love everyone else
[Luk 10:36-37 NIV] 36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
    3. Send
    -Sending seals the transfer
-Christ sealed us with the Holy Spirit as he sent us.

    Series Big Idea
A parent’s job is to gradually transfer a child’s DEPENDENCE from THEMSELVES to GOD.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. -Proverbs 3:5-6

    The Parenting Realities
    1. The job is simple, not easy.
    2. We get them for a limited time to impress upon them a divine purpose.
    3. RELATIONSHIPS are the most influential forces in a child’s life.

Three Most Influential Relationships in a Child’s Life

    Creating Great Family Environments
    1. MODEL the environment you want, especially when NO ONE IS WATCHING.

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. -1 Timothy 4:16

    2. Speak LIFE to your kids.

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. -Proverbs 18:21

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. -Psalm 139:13-16

    Deuteronomy 6:1-9
These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children.
